Possible causes of the Olutorsk earthquake in 2006 year are discussed in this paper on the basis of the tectonic history of the Koryak-Kamchatka region in the Late Cenozoic locations of other strong earthquakes. The hypocenter of the Olutorsk earthquake is limited to the Miocene subduction zone. We suggest three possible reasons for the Olutorsk earthquake: a residual compression of the Miocene subduction zone, exertion of the restored isostatic equilibrium and rebuilding of mantle convection due to interaction of the Pacific and the North American lithospheric plates.
